I'm sure you wouldn't let your child drive a car without him or her first learning how.
It's not different in golf, where knowing about etiquette, rules, equipment and instruction is paramount to fulfilling a junior golfing experience.
LIFE LESSONS FROM GOLF:
Humility and Respect:
Golf requires that you show courtesy to others and that you communicate with respect.
Good sportsmanship must be exhibited at all times and that all play is ended with an exchange of a hand shake.
Punctuality:
Tee Times: If your tee times is 9.00am, this means that you are to check into the starter by 8.40am at the latest. It does not mean you turn up to play at 8.55am with clubs etc still in the car. If you are not able to play it is common courtesy to advise the organisation who are running the event of the Club where the event is being held.
Honesty:
Golf is a game of honour, and recognising that a transgression has occurred and taking reponsibility for the transgression is a part of the game. Incorrect scores being reported is only cheating yourself.
Safety:
Golf Balls and clubs are very hard and dangerous instruments and one of the first and foremost rules of golf is safety. Do not take practice swings in the direction of another person, do not swing clubs when someone is walking by.
Quiet:
Golf requires an amazing amount of concentration and quiet is required at all times when other members of the group are preparing to hit their shots.
Focus:
Golf is a tough sport. It requires that you not only know the physics of the game, but also the mental and emotional aspects. Silencing the inner critic after a `bad shot' is crucial to regaining clear focus for your next shot.
Practice, Persistence and Listening:
In golf, instant success is very rare. To become a good golfer you need to practice, committ, be persistant and be open to listening to mentors. It is important to know that we rarely reach our goals in one 'stroke'. All of the above can help us through life's tough challenges.
