Rain fails to dampen enthusiasm of school golfers
About 80 school-age golfers braved the heat, mosquitoes and a waterlogged track at Rockhampton Golf Course on Monday, February 22 during the first round of the Capricornia Interschool Golf Championships.
Evergreen Rockhampton Grammar School student Brad Jeffrey stole the limelight in the secondary division with an impressive three-over-the –card 75, eight shots clear of his nearest rival, Matthew Lacey, from St Brendan’s, Yeppoon.
Tannum Sands State High School sisters Taylor and Georgia McManus were in the winner’s circle for their gross and nett wins respectively in the secondary girls division. Taylor scored 86 gross and Georgia, who is just in Year 8, scored a 69 nett.
The Kin Kora State School pair of Lachlan Cartwright and Jayden Bayliss, both aged 10 and in Year 6, took out the primary school 18 hole gross event.
Lachlan also won the primary school boys’ individual gross event, while Jayden was the nett individual winner.
Rising star Keira King, a Year 7 Farnborough State School student, won the primary school girls’ gross division.
The 9 Hole event was hotly contested by a large group of primary school students, with the eventual winner being St Patrick’s School Emerald student Harry Wills with a sound score of 54.
The 9 Hole nett event couldn’t be split and was shared between Elliott Parker from St Peter’s Rockhampton and Nicholas Stallard of St Patrick’s School, Emerald.
The 9 Hole girls event saw two 45 handicappers impress with up-and-coming Mt Archer State School representative Jamie-Lee Salway carding an impressive 60 for the gross title and Melanie Posner from St Francis Primary School at Tannum Sands played well below her handicap with a very solid 29 nett.
St Patrick’s School at Emerald took a clean sweep in the 9 hole Primary teams events with their Team 1, comprising of James Mullins, Nicholas Stallard and Harry Wills, winning the gross title and Team 2, comprising Tane Costar, Aaron Brown and Claire Banks, taking out the nett title.
The final round of the annual competition will be held at Yeppoon in October this year.

2009 New Year Report
Welcome members to a soggy New Year and what a year it has been so far for me. Rebecca Lee entered the world at12.05 pm on Tuesday 3/3/09 ten toes and ten fingers everything seems to be there. She decided to come a week early.
It was funny, we saw the doctor on Monday the 2nd and he said nothing would happen until the end of the week. So while teaching classes on Monday afternoon the phone's ringing and I just ignored it until my last class and I noticed that the calls were from home. Whoops!
|
Things were starting to happen early, so got home as soon as possible then off to the hospital and the rest is history. Jayden is now 2 years of age and starting to enjoy hitting the ball around the yard. He now has the basics of grip and posture which is a good start. Golf, cricket anything with a ball and stick he is contented with. Over the holiday's Jayden and I went out to the golf course in a buggy and played 18 holes. I was a little nervous but everything seemed to go well. I hit some good shots and so did Jayden!
Another successful masters was had by all at Tweed Heads, the weather was kind to us. I'd like to say well done to all the rep's who qualified for the masters and well done at the event. Some of you might be disappointed on your effects there. Don't be …. Firstly you qualified to get to the masters, there were a lot that didn't. Secondly you gained lots of experience playing on a championship golf course. Thirdly the new friends you have made along the way, whether they were other Australians or overseas visitors to our country. For the players that have made the trip before, the course played differently this year because the wind was consistently blowing from the west. In other years it has come predominately from the south east, so again new experiences where gained.
The weather this year has been wet in the CQ area, but we haven't received the rain fall of those in the far north of the state. We have been getting showers regularly to keep the soil moist. It seems that the weather was similar to last year. One good thing is that we haven't had many really hot humid days again this year which was a bonus. The School visits so far have been slow due to the weather, so I have been trying to concentrate on some smaller schools which are able to work around the weather. I certainly feel sorry for our far north players who are not able to get any golf or practice in at all. I hope everything dries out soon and gets back some normality.
Some changes for this year. There will be some weekend clinnic's held in your area throughout the year only for the Foundation members. So it will depend on the club whether or not it will be in the morning or the afternoon. I was thinking if the numbers were good, I would split it up into handicaps [lower and higher] so it would be better for every body and more productive for you all. For the Wide Bay members it will be on the weekend of an open day. While I am in the area for the open day, I will do the clinic as well. I think it's a good move by the Foundation and it will give you more value for your membership. I am hoping to continue the clinics held in the Wide Bay area during the afternoons mid week, so I look forward to working with you throughout the year.
We have made some adjustments to the Shark Challenge events this year. The main one being that after every round you will be able to see how you are progressing on the web site. I had mentioned a few years ago at the Bargara open day about the possibility of showing the point's roughly mid way through the year so you have a guide on how you are progressing. I received some phone calls last year from parents wanting to know how their kids we going in the points competition, so I've assumed that the kids were to shy to see me or ring me about it. So we will trial this for the year and see how it goes. Members if you like or dislike the format let me know and we can discuss it. Also on that the Wide Bay members will have to wait until I get home and am able to send the results to the office. This will usually only be a few extra days. Just to let you know, we had done things the old way so that it was more of a surprise for the winner at the end of the year. This would also ease the pressure on individuals throughout the year which would allow them to concentrate on the job at hand and the round on the day, not on the points and position they are in or want to be in at the end of the year.
Last year I noticed slow play at some of the open days. It is an issue talked about on a regular basis and probably an on-going one. Other than doing the normal things, trying to keep up with the group in front, or hit off when ready with the groups consent, I have noticed that some players wait until it was their turn to hit, then grab their ball and tee out of their pocket or bag, then waste time working out what club to hit or consoling with there caddy. That all can be done as the other players are hitting off, so you are ready to go when it is your turn. Once we have teed the ball up, one useful tip that will help your game is, have a little routine that you can repeat every time. It might be to have one practice swing then visualize the ball flying in the air and finishing where you want it. Walk up to the ball get comfortable and swing with in yourself. You may have a swing through in there from a lesson that you have just received but keep it short so you can repeat it every time even on the practice fairway. As you know consistency is the key.
See you out on the course, Doug Gardner

|
Runner up in the Bargara Junior Classic in the under 14 years age group against a strong field of juniors all who treat the Bargara event as one of Queensland majors junior events, where juniors come from many clubs throughout Queensland. He won his pennant matches in the Central Queensland Pennants,
Jake has already qualified for the 2008 Greg Norman Junior Masters.
Jake competed in the recent Rydges Capricorn International Pro-am, where he had to opportunity to compete along side Adam Blyth. I spoke with Adam after the round, and he stated that Jake is a much better player than he was at that age it is frightening, the other professional he played with over the four days of the pro-am told me that they have at least 6 to 7 years to earn some income before Jake comes on the scene in the professional ranks.
Yeppoon's Champion golfer Terry Bulger who has won open tournaments through out Central Queensland and Queensland, has quoted that Jake is the best he has had the opportunity to have a round of golf with, Terry has given encouragement by assisting every junior golfer and has been one of the people who has helped the likes of Jason Day, Boyd Watts and Adam Blyth,
(You will see by the photo of Jake how tall he is, against his driver.)

Coaching Clinic at Yeppoon - 4th June 2008
|
The Clinic was organised by Gurney Clamp of Yeppoon and involved five pros, including Charlie Earp.
The day was a huge hit and was well run. About 40 kids of all levels attended and spent time doing iron shots, chipping and chip and running the ball. Charlie had plenty of wit and the kids responded well to his caring attitude.

CQ Junior Pennants
CQ Junior Pennants is under way with the Capricorn team, headed by Aaron Longbottom from Rockhampton, winning convincingly at Rockhampton on March 2. This weekend sees the two teams pitted against eachother again at the Gladstone Golf Course, which is in pristine condition following more than 500mm or rains since the beginning of 2008. This weekend's event is shaping as a much closer affair than the previous clash, with more depth in the Curtis team. Gladstone's Stephen Hart returns to the team after a short-term shoulder injury and is pitted against Longbottom who fought well against a late charge in the previous round for victory against a newcomer to Calliope Junior Golf club from England. With the home-course advantage, the clash between Hart and Longbottom is likely to be closely followed. Other contenders are: Jake McLeod, of Yeppoon, against BITS player Dylan Huth. Capricorn has yet to finalise its women's squad but the likely contenders are Ashley Borich, Sarah Weston and Sarah Antcliff against Lily McKelvie, Caitlin Hooley, Jacinta Lang and Taylor McMannus.
Junior fixtures
Gladstone, Calliope, BITS and Miriam Vale have resumed weekly fixtures with increased numbers and some good play being seen. Gladstone has added some extra social rounds this year which is proving popular and the addition of 13 holes this year and playing of the men's tees for the boys is providing plenty of challenges, which the children are relishing. The Gladstone Club also has a strong three hole and six hole contingent this year, placing the club in good stead for the future. Talented junior Stephen Hart has had a short-term injury but has returned to play now and has his sights set on big things following his third place at the Schweppes Challenge at the Sunshine Coast late last year. The club has yet to have an 18 hole girl but indicators suggest it won't be too long and girls will be among the ranks. BITS has played a mix of rounds in the first few weeks of the year, including a coaching clinic for the 30 or so new three-holers who have joined or returned this year. We have yet to catch up with Calliope and Miriam so there will be more news on them soon.
Horseys clinch annual Shield
DAN Horsey reckoned he had a pretty ordinary round on Saturday, March 1 at Boyne Island Tannum Sands (BITS) golf course and his dad Steph felt the same way.
But the score card from the foursomes round suggested otherwise.
The pair’s 89 was easily enough for a 14-stroke victory in the Merv Caird and Mal Castledine Shield, played every year since 1985.
But what was different this year was the inclusion of an inaugural Merv Caird and Mal Castledine Nett Shield which was won by another father/son combination in Murray and Lachlan Hughes with a score of 77, pipping out Brendan and James Crowe by one stroke.
A club spokesperson said the Shield day was normally played late in the year but this event, the 2007 shield, had been postponed from last year due to wet weather.
The 2008 shield day will be played late this year.
During the presentations, it was announced that Dan Horsey, who is nearly 15, is junior boys’ caption for 2008 and Rachel Tait was named girls’ caption.
Results: 18 Holes Foursomes.
Merv Caird/Mal Castledine Shield.
Gross winners - Steph and Dan Horsey.
Gross r-up - Ben Norris and Sonia Horley.
Nett winners - Murray and Lachlan Hughs.
Nett r-up - Brendan and James Crowe.

Welcome to our new website....
|
Welcome to our new website, which will be updated on a regular bases and should be great! I'll be able to keep you all informed on the events held in the Wide Bay and Central Queensland areas, with the progress points of the Shark Challenge and Coaching Clinics being held, where and when from mid week to weekend. The aim is to make sure that all our members will be able to get extra coaching through clinics somewhere near to your home club.
Rockhampton Driving Range has been very supportive to the Foundation and to me with a popular 18 hole putt putt course, and a fully equipped function centre. This is a well equipped driving range catering for all levels of golfers, from grass to synthetic grass mats are available for teeing off. The Rockhampton District members got to use these facilities at a coaching clinic on Monday the 10th April. Range Balls and the use of the function centre was provided free of charge. Thank you to Wayne and Carol Twigg for your support.
I conducted a presentation at Rockhampton Driving Range recently where half way through our session we went inside to use their conference room. Here I used my Swinger program from the laptop and projected swing faults onto a wall for the members to see. For them to understand how the golf swing works and what faults produce certain ball flights (see photo). It was very well received by our members so I am making some inquires about a portable projector.
I would appreciate your feed back on clinics you would like to see in your area. My idea for CQ is to provide weekend coaching on a monthly basis, along with Bundy area also possibly on a weekend or week day depending on what day is best suited to you members; Maryborough and Gympie areas midweek clinics also monthly. Please let me know if you are interested in attending any of these and what days would suit you best.
I've conducted two exhibition matches, one in Yeppoon and one in Rockhampton, with the CQ Coordinator Gurney Clamp. The exhibition match is about encouraging our 6, 9 and 18 holers to pursuit a higher level. Areas that are covered are stretching, warming up, pre-shot routine, course management, rules of golf, basic swing faults, course preservation, etiquette, recovery shots and maintenance of clubs. We want to help encourage you to achieve your life time goals and to inspire you to go beyond, the skies the limit.
Well that is it from me for now, I'll see you all at the open days. Good luck and hope the golfing gods are on your side.
Doug
